What is an Emergency Medical Call Taker?

An Emergency Call-Taker is an emergency medical professional who is responsible for receiving, recording, and managing requests for ambulance assistance.  The Emergency Medical Call Taker will field calls for the transport of medically ill and traumatically injured patients in emergency and non-emergency situations. The Emergency Medical Call Taker must quickly and accurately collect all necessary information to deploy appropriate emergency resources.


About the Program:

Eligible candidates will be hired on as a full-time employee and compensated for all completed training time. Candidates will complete a training period that includes classroom-based training, scenario-based skill development and one on one training designed to prepare them for work in the East Region Communications Center.  The Communications Academy provides the internationally recognized Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) training and certification, CPR certification, and training on all necessary non-emergency intake skills and standards.


What happens after completing the Academy?

After successful completion of the Communications Academy, the employee will have earned the Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification and be prepared to take on the responsibilities of an Emergency Medical Call Taker in a high-volume, fast-paced communications center.  Employees will continue on-the-job training to service the multiple coverage areas.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Understands and adequately implement the concepts of Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) as published in Principles of Emergency Medical Dispatch (and as customized by AMR) as a minimum standard of care.
  • Allocates EMS resources based on approved protocols and established processes.
  • Maintain a high level of expertise in the use of the computer aided dispatching (CAD) system
  • Responsible for complete and accurate data entry for all service requests.
  • Other duties as assigned by the department

About American Medical Response - East Region Communications:

The AMR East Region Communications Center is one of the largest private EMD Communications Center in the country.  Call volume includes interfacility requests from hospitals and nursing homes as well as emergency requests from private callers and 911 contracts.  We act as a secondary public safety answering point to various 911 agencies. Employees are frequently required to triage medical calls and provide pre-arrival instructions to callers when applicable.

Applicants Must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have proof of a HS diploma or GED
  • Successfully complete pre-interview screening
  • Be able to attend Academy classes Monday – Thursday, 0800 – 1800
  • Be flexible to adjust schedule during one on one training.
  • Be able to function well in a high stress/fast paced environment while managing a large volume of emergency and non-emergency transports in an efficient and courteous manner.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal skills essential for effective communication with patients, medical personnel, co-workers, and clients.


*$2,500 to be paid via three (3) partial payments. $500 will be paid at successful completion of an employee's probationary period, per ERCC CBA. $500 will be paid at the end of two-hundred and forty (240) days of employment, and $1,500 will be paid at one (1) year of employment.
