Earn while you learn to be an Emergency Medical Technician

American Medical Response is offering a unique opportunity for individuals interested in a rewarding career in pre-hospital medicine. We want to hire highly motivated and driven individuals who would like to earn their Emergency Medical Technician certification.

What is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

The primary focus of the EMT is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for sick and injured patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation, and functions under medical oversight.

About the Program:

The eligible candidate will be hired as a full-time employee and trained as Driver Lead while in attendance at the EMT Academy.  The Academy is a rigorous, college-level program which qualifies the employee to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam. There is no cost for the class and all books, tuition, fees, and uniforms will be paid by AMR. Employees will be paid their hourly rate to attend all classes and clinical rotations/ride longs.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Be at least 18 years old and have proof of a HS diploma or GED
• Have a valid Driver’s License
• Have all required immunizations
• Successfully complete the pre-employment screening

Pre-employment Screening includes:

• Physical Abilities Test
• Drug Screen
• Background and Motor Vehicle Record check
• Finger Printing
• General knowledge written exam

Driver Lead Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Transport patients between private residences and healthcare facilities in a timely manner
• Complete appropriate trip paperwork
• Clean and maintain units to ensure they are in working order
• Ability to work with and around others, extended days, inside and outside, and during possible hazardous conditions
• Ability to use stretcher, hydraulic lifts, and wheelchairs
• Manage disposable medical supplies
• Must be able to lift, drag, hoist, and carry different types of equipment and other items

What happens after passing the course?

After successful completion of the course, the employee will be eligible to take a written and skills test offered by the NREMT and will be required to work full time for AMR for a period of at least two years.

Upon receipt of the EMT certification and successful completion of the perception process, the employee will be promoted to the EMT level, be assigned their full-time shift, and receive their updated pay rate.

EMT-Basic Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assess each call situation to determine best course of action and appropriate protocol
• Utilize maps to locate hospitals, medical facilities, and home addresses.
• Utilize medical equipment to assess patient and carry out basic life support functions
• Develop and utilize triage skills to provide optimal efficiency during calls
• Assist paramedic or nurse with the preparation of advanced life support equipment
• Provide patient care according to clinical protocols and safety requirements
• Availability to work evenings, nights, and/or weekends (if necessary)

• Adhere to all company policies and procedures.

• Prospective employee agrees to a two-year term of employment upon completion of EMT academy and successful obtainment of certification. Failure to complete term may result in repayment of some or all course fees to AMR
• Failure to pass and/or successfully complete course and obtain certification will result in repayment of some or all course fees to AMR
• All costs covered by AMR through first NREMT test. Subsequent re-tests, if necessary, are the responsibility of the prospective employee/EMT student.
